In Re Spencer (Australia)

A teenager who was born female, but who identifies as male, has won the right to consent to begin testosterone treatment, despite being under the legal age of 18.

A doctor who will administer the testosterone said if Spencer did not get the treatment, he would be at significant risk of self harm.

He would remain feminine and if he began menstruation it would be intolerable because he had a gender identity that was “unambiguously male’’, the doctor said. After hearing from Spencer’s treating doctors, a Family Court judge decided Spencer was legally competent to give informed consent to the treatment.
